Today, the world celebrates Global Handwashing Day, a way of increasing awareness of the importance of handwashing with soap. In Davao city, it was held this morning in Buhangin Elementary School together with selected students, teachers and their family members.
The celebration was initiated by Procter and Gamble (P&G), through its flagship soap brand Safeguard and supported by UNICEF and different organizations in the city like the Health Office and the Department of Education.
This awareness campaign aimed to educate students and parents alike about everyday sources of germs. With that, P&G prepared a fun game for everyone through a scavenger hunt for germs. Students searched through different locations like the school, the home and the playground for germs to collect. Thinking that they found the germs, they were surprised to discover that there was more than meets the eye. A UV light revealed that an invisible lotion was unknowingly applied on their skin while they searched through the locations. This lotion simulated the invisible, disease-causing germs from everyday items.
The last part of the program was to let them (students) wash their hands properly with the use of soap. This habit will help keep families, classrooms, schools and communities healthy and free from any sickness.
This year’s local theme was “Linis Lusog sa Global Handwashing Day”!
May this celebration reminds us that health starts with proper hygiene. On Global Handwashing Day and beyond, raise your hand for hygiene. Protect your family from disease-causing germs with Safeguard.
