International Day for Disaster Reduction

Happened last Oct. 11, 2013, Friday at Mall of Asia followed by a conference at Heritage Hotel, Makati. It was attended by NGOs, Gov. Agencies and officials from different municipalities in the country. This year’s focus of IDDR is for people living with disabilities with the theme “Living with Disability and Disasters”.

With what is happening nowadays in our country, we people living with disabilities really need to reduce our risk to disasters and be aware about the importance of Disaster Risk Reduction. Encouraging every citizen and government to take part in building more disaster resilient communities and nations are the objectives of celebrating IDDR for this year.

About one billion of these people are overlooked in the process and  planning for disaster risk reduction. It is a fact also that persons with disabilities has need when dealing & coping with disasters.

IDDR 2013 intends to switch on and amplify this critical issue of including the needs of persons living with disabilities now and for the post-2015 framework for disaster risk reduction.

Together with six NGOs namely UNCID, PLAN, ACF, Handicap. Int’l, with the support of MMDA, SM, Natl Council for Disability Affairs,

Behind the Rolling Chair was fortunate enough to be part of this very important event. I actually hosted the event and had the chance to talk representing the people with disabilities. Shared my own experience in a disaster and how this project of iDDR be of great help in the pwd sector.
