Legal Rights of Persons With Disabilities

Who are Persons With Disabilities (PWDs)? How do we define PWDs? What are the scope of legal rights of Persons With Disabilities? These three questions are common especially for us in the sector. Below, is a video discussing the above questions. Listen to Mr Manuel Agcaoli (CEO of Tahanang Walang Hagdan) and Ms Carmen Zubiaga (Nat’l Council on Disability Affairs) as they expound issues that matter to the PWD community and to our society.

Persons With Disabilities includes those who have long -term physical, mental, intellectual or sensory impairments which in interaction with various barriers may hinder their full and effective participation with society on an equal basis with others.

Priority and express lanes in all commercial and government establishment for PWDs, 20% discount on medicines and other medical services including diagnostic and laboratory fees, also for professional fees of attending doctors in all public and private hospitals and medical facilities. These are just some of the privileges that a PWD can avail.

The Magna Carta of Disabled Persons or the Republic Act 7277 is an ammendment that provide rehabilitation, self-development and self-reliance of PWD and their integration into the mainstream of society for other purposes.

In a country like ours, it is very important that we are aware of these things regardless if you have or dont have disability because im sure each and everyone of us know one.

WE, THE ONES WHO ARE CHALLENGED NEED TO BE HEARD AND SEEN NOT JUST AS A DISABILITY, BUT AS A PERSON WHO HAS AND WILL CONTINUE TO BLOOM. BE SEEN NOT ONLY AS A HANDICAP, BUT AS A WELL INTACT HUMAN BEING.
